I just need a good cheap host to start this new website - any ideas? Do you really need dedicated hosting? Or is VPS fine?

50 euros per month is ideally my budget, I know my way around plesk - so that would be helpful if it has plesk.

Any ideas would be great, thanks in advance.

RE: Torrent Hosting Suggested for TS SE Series
yes stay away from shared hosting - think about it if you have a tracker what does the torrent client do hit your server every 30 seconds or so (thats every person seeding or leeching)and the fact your running php to that in itself will eat up the procesor on the shared hosting box and once they find out how much your tracker is using the chances are they will b oot you off for cpu abuse i know it happened me a few times lol
dedi hosting is really the way to go but expencive i have used this (still have one)but the more you want in control panels and graphical control programs the more you pay also there is a limit on them for BW but that shouldnt be a problem with php.
however if you do what i did got an old pc [3.4ghzP4 1.5DDR2 ram 300 gig hdd and use my home connection which is only 7.6mbdown/672 kbps up not fast but lots for starting up remember php is processed on the server side and the transfer of files are tiny compared to html sites so you dont need to much speed on the internet line for it but do need a resonable computer to run it from and a good os i used ubuntu server which means all i need to do is load the linux os on the box and config it once done i can dump it in any corner because all its needs is a power plug and ethernet or wifi connection on it and the rest you do from another machine log in on ssh and you can control everything and if you like things graphical.
install webmin sudo atp-get install webmin-version which does not use up apache because its runs from its own server and has its own SSL auto installed on it
u need to run firewalls pass ports to be opened and closed and what i do is shut down all unused programs on the linux box that are not being used the less the better less risks then
the main programs u need are php/apache/mysql then you might want phpmyadmin for using sql in a graphical layout rather than using commands however its a good idea to remove this when not being used uninstall it it only takes a few seconds to install it again if you need then webmin this to can be removed from the server once you have finished with it and your site is setup the way you want it for the a very small price compared to dedi and remmeber you can set up torrent flux on the box if you connection is good to seed your files from that server to and i have to say the support here if you run into problems is 5****** service

Please add to this if you know a good server host

First, thanks for the suggestions.

For a tracker with few members, just to start, which plan do you suggest? Based in this hosting: http://www.lunarpages.com

Thanks!

I used to use Santrex.net
Note they don't allow trackers/torrents on their VPS's. I learned the hard way.

Or

Fanaticalvps.com

They are good, been with them for about a month or so. They allow trackers on them as well as rutorrent. I asked them through msn. They say as long as it's not "illegal" we can. But we all know when they say that they mean sure go ahead! LOL.

EDIT::

I asked them why it said i only have 2TB of bandwidth in my control panel, here is the message i got back.

Hey,

There is no actual limit, those numbers can be ignored they're just for internal monitoring.

Regards,

Nick

They have very bad connection quality and also there support is VERY bad. They never give any straight answers and have you running round in circles trying to get one, They also take about 3 days to answer most tickets etc.

You will have nothing but problems with them aswell as your TSSE license having constant problems because it cant connect to license server.

JUST STAY AWAY, THEY ARE CHEAP FOR A REASON!
